Acts of Kindness: Easter Egg Messages

I am so excited about today’s acts of kindness for kids idea!  Not only is it fantastic, it is also from one of my very dear, real-life friends, Courtney.  She was at the soccer practice with her boys last week and came across some plastic Easter eggs with kindness messages inside!  The eggs made their day and they decided to pay it forward and make some kindness eggs for others to find too!

Eggs of Kindness: An Easter Acts of Kindness Idea for Kids

After spreading Eggs of Kindness throughout with her kids in her community she also agreed to do an Acts of Kindness for Kids Hangout with me on Google Plus!  Check out the video–we had so much fun chatting about how to use something as simple as a plastic egg to teach our kids about spreading kindness to others!

My kids have been obsessed with leaving Happy Notes for people so, of course, they loved the idea of hiding eggs filled with kindness messages all of town.  We can’t wait to use some of our leftover plastic eggs for acts of kindness this week!

Egg Shakers and Song for Preschoolers

My kids LOVE playing with egg shakers!  They’re so much fun, easy to make, and (surprisingly) last for a long time.  I was just making a bunch for my son’s preschool class and realized that not everyone has made them before!

So here’s a quick “how to” along with our favorite preschool song to shake to

How to make egg shakers

How to Make Egg Shakers:

  1. Put a scoop of rice, pebbles, granola, etc in the bottom of a plastic egg
  2. Line the rim of the bottom with glue
  3. Click the egg together and wipe away the excess glue
  4. Hold together for 15-20 seconds to set
  5. SHAKE!!!!

Egg shakers are good for older preschoolers who don’t put toys in their mouths, but even the big kids will still need to be supervised since the glue is only so strong.

And now for the best egg shaking song….

According to her website the song was “developed out of an improvisation with the kids. They were playing with egg-shaped “shakers” and I needed a song to go along with it.”

And the song she came up with is perfect–it gets kids moving and shaking and is so much fun!

Egg Carton Computer and Jelly Bean Toss Game

It’s time for another Tinkerlab Creative Challenge!

The item this month is an egg carton and we definitely have lots of those in our craft cupboard right now!  Last Friday the big kids each got an egg carton to create something with.

The almost 4 year old got right to work cutting even though he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to make yet.  After he had cut the cup section into 3 parts he announced he was going to make a game and would know what kind of a game it was going to be after he finished painting it.

The 6 year old turned her carton around in her hands a couple times and decided it would make a perfect play computer.  She thought this would be especially good because we only have one pretend laptop and they usually need more than one computer when they’re playing.  She cut the top off of the carton and flipped it over so that the the inside of the top could be the computer screen.

She painted the “keys” each a different color and traced and cut out paper to cover the writing on the top of the carton.

After the almost 4 year old had finished painting he decided the cartons were going to be “catchers” and that they needed handles.  He cut and painted a paper towel roll to attach to the bottom to use to hold it.

I hot glued the rolls to the cartons for the game and the top onto the bottom of the carton to make the computer.

And here’s the finished game!  Instead of catching a ball in the cups he wanted to try and catch jelly beans — and his little sister agreed that was a wonderful idea!

Other than making a computer for their pretend play the oldest didn’t have an exact plan for how they were going to use it until it was done.  Since then they have used it in their “office” to work on their website, to practice “typing” colors, and as part of an I Spy game that all three of them understood the rules too even though I never did.  Upcycled, simple to make, and full of pretend play opportunities – I love it!

So far neither of the little two have caught a jelly bean in their “catchers,” but they have had lots of fun (and eaten lots of jelly beans) trying!

Eggbert the Easter Egg Puppet and Song!

“Eggbert the Easter Egg” is one of our favorite Easter songs.  A couple years ago my oldest and I made these cute socks puppets to use while we sing.  All you need to make one yourself is a yellow sock, a square of white felt, a scrap of orange felt or any other fabric, fabric glue and two googly eyes.

To Make an Eggbert the Easter Egg Sock Puppet:

1.  Cut an egg shape from the white felt.  Then use the fabric scissors to cut it in half.

2.  Put the sock on your hand and fold it over. Determine where to put the fabric glue so that the egg is closed when your hand is closed.  Stick the egg pieces on and allow to dry.

3.   Cut a small triangle beak out of the orange fabric.

4.  Glue the eyes and beak on the sock to make Eggbert.

5.  Get ready to sing!

I was going to include a video of me singing the song with the puppet so you could learn the words, but I can’t get it to work.  After a little Googling, I found a YouTube video of a version sung by Rosemary Clooney.  Enjoy!

Easter Egg Garland and Collages — Great Scissor Practice!

Last week my 2 and 3 year old were having lots of fun experimenting with different painting techniques, aka painting with everything they could find, and we ended up with lots and lots of paintings.

So, my 3 (almost 4) year old practiced his cutting skills and turned the paintings into Easter egg garland!  He cuts all the time, but I was definitely impressed at how good of a job he did with the eggs.  They ended up being kind of small so we attached them to a ribbon with tiny paper clips since punching holes in them would have caused them to hang sideways.   Such a cheery addition to our kitchen!

I saved all of the scraps from the garland project for cutting and tearing practice.  After a couple days of scissor and ripping fun we ended up with lots of little pieces of colored paper.

I set out the pieces for the kids to make Easter collages with and they all decided (or the oldest chose and they all mimicked) to make Easter eggs.  I just love the results!
