If you haven’t used story stones with your preschoolers before then you must stop what you are doing and add it to your “must do list” right now!

Story stones are ones of those super simple activities that are jam-packed full of learning in the guise of keeping kids busy. These kind of activities are worth their weight in gold. Or maybe more because stones don’t weigh that much.

Make these bug themed story stones for your preschool kids today! I promise you won’t regret it and can use them for years.

How to Use Bug Themed Story Stones with Kids

Story stones are used to inspire kids to create their own stories. As kids chose a stone they incorporate it into the story as a character, a setting, or plot action without even realize they are using story elements. It’s a fun and low-stress way for kids to use their own creativity and be authors–even before they can write!

These bug themed story stones are motivating for kids because it is a topic they are familiar with and are comfortable talking about. They can be used in a center in a preschool classroom or at home as a busy bag. These bug themed story stones can even be taken out to inspire storytelling while waiting for food to be served at a restaurant.

How to Make Bug Themed Story Stones

Here are the supplies you need:

  • smooth flat stones
  • paint markers or permanent markers like Sharpies (acrylic paint would work too)
  • Mod Podge (optional)

Decide what you would like to include on your bug themed story stones. You can copy mine or swap out for any favorite insect or setting that may be relevant to your kids or class.

Draw (or paint) the the insects and other objects you choose on each rock. Allow to fully dry.

Brush Mod Podge over the surface of the stones where your drawing is to seal it in.

Once the bug themed story stones are ready set them out for the kids to use. You may need to model how to use story stones at first.

Once kids get the hang of using story stones you can throw them into a plastic bag and take them with you on the go! They are great for anything from circle time in the classroom to waiting at a restaurant. This is one busy bag older kids and adults can join in with too!
