Christmas activities are in full swing around here.  Maybe you’re looking for a fun activity for the kids to do one afternoon, or a learning activity that celebrates the Christmas season.  This Christmas Tree Pre-Math Skills Activity is great for the preschool age set.

Pre-math skills are important for preschoolers as they prepare for more complex math concepts down the road.  This pre-math activity works on sequencing size and ordering from smallest to largest.  Comparison and contrast is easy and fun with this festive craft!

Pre-Math Christmas Tree Activity for Preschool

Christmas Tree Math Activity for Preschool

We started with a triangle cut from green card stock.  Encourage your Preschooler to identify the shape and color.  I cut different lengths of red yarn for our Christmas Tree decoration.

Small to Big Preschool Math Activity

I had my Preschooler sequence the lengths of yarn into order from smallest to largest.  This is a great way to talk about order and categorization with your child.  Discuss how some lengths of the yarn are much smaller and others are much larger.  You can break this activity down by showing your child the smallest length and asking which is the next biggest length.

Next, I used double sided tape to make strips lengthwise on the Christmas Tree.

My daughter then placed the yarn onto the Christmas tree in order from smallest to longest.

We then decorated with different sized crafting pom poms.  Small, smaller, smallest are examples of measurement vocabulary that preschoolers work on.  This is one way for children to understand measurement of size.

We worked on many pre-math skills with this Christmas Tree craft, and ended up with a fun decoration for the holidays!
