DIY Spooky Spider Lawn Decor

Oooooooh! Spooooooky spider!  That’s what my kids say every time they see the spider my husband made last year for Halloween.  We were re-landscaping our yard right before Halloween last year and we didn’t get our outside decor up until the last minute.  Our neighbors go crazy with decorations and the kids did not think out house was spooky enough so my husband made this cool DIY spider lawn decor inspired by one we saw on the old Family Fun website.

The tutorial is no longer online so I’ll share our version of it in case you want to greet trick-or-treaters with your own spooky spider lawn decor!

DIY Spooky Lawn Decor

  • empty gallon sized milk carton
  • black duct tape
  • plastic egg (we used a glow in the dark one!)
  • foam pipe insulation

Once you gather your materials the DIY spider can be put together in a very short period of time. The milk container becomes the body. Begin by wrapping it entirely with the black duct tape.

Then create the spider legs. Cut the foam piping insulation halfway through in the middle and tape them at an angle. Attach the legs to the body with LOTS of duct tape or electrical tape. We used a glow in the dark plastic egg for the eyes but a regular plastic egg would work too. Add a little of the duct tape to the middle of the egg to make it look more eye-like.

How awesome does it look in the spider web?!? We made this one years ago and get it out every Halloween–it holds up very well!

Spoooooky spider!

I love this, Megan! My 4-year old requested that we cobweb and spider our house yesterday, and when we checked in at the end of the day to talk about the highlights, she said, “decorating for Halloween!” How fun that you made your OWN spider. We’ll have to try this next year.

You really should! When they see ours they are SO proud of it! Plus it’s a little friendlier (and cheaper!) than much of the large Halloween decor from the store!

It was one of those stretchy spider webs you can buy for $1 at Target or the dollar store!
