Hunger Heroes: A Food Drive Play Date

Last week we went orange for No Kid Hungry by inviting our friends to the park for a Hunger Heroes play date!  Everyone was asked to bring food donations for our local food bank and we were so excited that over 30 of our little friends showed up with enough food to fill 3 large boxes.

Each of the Hunger Heroes received a “today I helped end childhood hunger” sticker and an orange super hero cape to signify their good deed.   The kids also drew pictures on paper plates to be given out with the food donations, a task they did with  great thoughtfulness and compassion.

It was their attitudes, not just their actions, that turned the children into Hunger Heroes last week.

I was thrilled to have two of our local bloggers join the Moms Fighting Hunger cause.  Corey from the Best part blog and Asmita from Compulsive Foodie not only attended the event, but jumped in to help!  Corey is also a photographer and volunteered to photograph the event and Asmita is contributing a a future Moms Fighting Hunger project so stayed tuned for more info.

Love this 🙂 My husband runs a food bank over in England and this looks like a really good way to get young people involved.

Thanks so much! I was thrilled with how it turned out. My kids have always made weekly food donations through their preschool and our church so we have discussed this many times in the past, but there was something about involving all of their friends and creating drawings for the recipients that really took it to a new level for them. We will definitely be doing this again!

Thanks Megan for organizing this. We had a lot of fun. It was nice to meet the other mom’s and for the kids to play and get involved with this.

Megan, I love how fun, yet still focused on action, you made this event. I’m adding a link to it from my food drive page.

My girls have really gotten on board – they are so concerned that kids need food. It looks like all of these kids ‘get it’ too.

Hi Nicole! No, I invited a lot of kids so we held it at the park so the kids could just run around and play. There was a lot of pretend play going on with those capes!

My son is having a super hero themed birthday party in a few weeks and we thought of asking each guest to bring a donation or two for our local food bank. I just happened to come across your site, a perfect way to incorporate the request into his party!!
