This Ornament Sight Word activity is one that the kids will love in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It can be hard to keep the learning going when the kids are anxiously awaiting Christmas.
With all of the holiday events that happen during the month of December, sometimes kids just don’t want to do things like practice sight words. We made this active sight word game to keep the learning going while enjoying the holiday spirit.
I love to come up with creative ways to practice sight words. This sight word activity is perfect for Kindergartners, but could be used with older kids who have sight words, too.
Make the Ornament Sight Word Game
This activity was so easy to put together. I had my kids cover a sheet of vellum paper with crayon. They were able to scribble their energy out as they filled in sheets of vellum. You could definitely make these ornaments with plain paper, but I wanted the semi-see through effect of the vellum paper. They looked really good when we hung them on the Christmas tree and the twinkly lights shown through the background, too.
After the paper is filled in with color, use a small bowl to trace circles all over the paper. Add a small rectangle to the top of each circle to create an ornament shape. Cut out the shapes. Older kids can cut the ornament shapes and work on their scissor skills. Cutting thin paper like vellum is a scissor work out for kids, and more difficult than regular printed paper. This provides kids with a challenge when cutting along lines and also adds a different texture to cut that they might not be used to.
Ornament Sight Word Game Activity
Write sight words on the back of the ornaments with a black marker. You can play a few sight word games with these ornaments:
- Lay them out on a table. Ask you r child to find the sight words as you call out the word.
- Use the ornaments as flashcards.
- Ask your child to name one of the words. They can then go hide the ornament in the Christmas tree. When they have hidden all of the sight words, ask them to find words one at a time.
- Play a sight word scavenger hunt like this.
Have fun playing and learning this Christmas season!

This is so cute! My oldest is learning to read right now (and he’s obviously excited about Christmas), so this is a perfect activity for us. Love it!

What a wonderful collection! It’s these types of posts that make things a lot easier for me to introduce fun and educational activities in the home because I don’t have a teaching background or many creative bones in my body! Thank you.
