6 Ways to Make Story Time Special

There really is something magical about story time. Nothing beats that feeling of choosing a story and snuggling up together to share a new adventure.

Okay, maybe not everyday is picture perfect, but more often than not story time is the perfect time to bond with your kids.

6 Ways to Make Story Time Special

That’s why I’m so excited to partner with Put Me in the Story for this post–anything that gets kids excited about story time is awesome! They motivate kids by putting them right into the story. How cool is that?

How to Make Story Time Special

Develop a Routine

Kids respond well to structure and routine, that’s why bedtime stories work so well. If bedtime doesn’t work for you then develop a routine around something else. Read together after breakfast or while eating dinner. It doesn’t really matter what your routine is as long as kids know to expect it.

Get Cozy

That is how forever memories are made! Snuggle up on the couch or bed and read stories together. The cozier the better because then as kids grow they will feel comforted and loved by the memories of books.

Choose Books Together

This was a suggestion from a reader and I think it is so important. Choosing books together, whether it’s from the library, the bookstore or your bookshelf at home helps kids get excited about and invested in the act of reading.

Be Silly

I love this one. When I asked how others made story time special at their house my friend responded that they take turns reading in silly voices! What a great way to capture kids’ attention and get them excited about story time.

Do a Book Activity

Build off your children’s interests to make story time a success. It’s a great way to increase comprehension skills and a love of reading in kids. Follow up a favorite story with a related game, craft or recipe and kids will be asking to do it again and again!

Think Beyond the Couch

Or the rocking chair. Or the bedroom. Do whatever works for you! Try reading stories during meals or having faraway relatives read books during a video chat. Who cares if reading is traditional? Anything that your kids will respond to is the way to make reading a life long habit.

My kids are thrilled my the prospect of being one of the characters during story time! Is there anything more motivating than seeing your name in print? That’s why I love the personalized stories from Put Me in the Story so much–my kids get to interact with Santa and super heroes all in the pages of a book!

i-love-you-so-personalized-book-3dPut Me in the Story books, create a personal connection between your kids and the books they love.
