Craft for Kids: Duct Tape Hula Hoop

We just crossed hula hoop off our “Old School” Summer Bucket List!  And came up with a fun and easy duct tape craft for kids too!

Duct Tape Hula Hoop Craft for KidsWhen we were at Disney last week they had a hula hoop contest at the pool.  My 5 year old wanted to join in, but didn’t really know how to hula hoop yet so we knew that we had to practice when we got home!  Unfortunately, all of our hula hoops were deemed too girly or too broken…so we upcycled one for him instead!

Duct Tape Hula Hoop Craft

Duct tape (we got it at the dollar store)

Cheap hula hoop (ours is from the dollar store again)

Washi tape (optional)

This might be the easiest craft ever–all you need is a little muscle!  We wrapped a small piece of duct tape around the hula hoop once and cut it before we started to wrap the whole thing.

Then we wrapped the duct tape all the way around the hula hoop at a little bit of an angle.  My son really wanted blue stripes so we wrapped blue washi tape around the hula hoop to make stripes for him too.

How to Hula Hoop Kids ActivityOnce the hula hoop was ready it was time for a lesson from his big sister!  She gave him some tips–like don’t move your hips and big circles and try to keep the hula hoop around your waist.

The it was time to practice!  He got pretty good at it and is ready for the hula hoop contest next time we’re at Disney.  They have also been using the hula hoop to play lots of games this week.  It’s been used as a target, a jumping hoop, and more.

Cool way to make it okay with the guys. I use hoola hoops in my baton twirling classes as a fun activity. Just put on some music and the kids get creative with movement.
