We are always looking for ways to make handwriting practice fun! We've tried writing in the dirt and gone on many find and write letter scavenger hunts and were looking for even more fun ways to practice. Alphabet Letter Charades
This ABC activity was totally created by my kids so I feel like I'm guest posting on my own blog for this one! In fact I didn't even know they were playing their own version of alphabet charades until I went to call them for dinner, but I am so glad I saw them! They were having a blast and giggling up a storm trying to make and guess each other's letters. There weren't hard and fast rules for this game. They were just taking turns thinking of … [Read more...]
Handwriting Practice with Dirt and Sticks
Handwriting is a skill we need to practice in our house this year. My kindergartner gets bored practicing writing on paper so we like to mix it up. One of his favorite ways to practice is writing in dirt! He used a stick to write with--so if you have dirt and sticks in your backyard you are all set! We don't have any dirt patches so I added some dirt to an aluminum foil pan that could be used inside or outside. After awhile we added a little … [Read more...]
ABC Ice Cream Gross Motor Game
My preschooler is in the process of learning her uppercase and lowercase letters. To make practicing more fun we decided to play an ice cream themed game. All of my kids LOVE to play pretend and kitchen and restaurant play is a favorite so this ice cream game was a hit! To make the game I used 12 ball pit balls and 4 paper towel rolls. I cut the rolls into thirds to make the cones and wrote lowercase letters on the front. Then I used a … [Read more...]
ABC Activities: Fun with Animal Flash Cards

Artist and graphic designer, Julie Rustad, took ABC letter cards to a new level when she became a mom, she painted a series of animals that he son could actually see where he lived in Arizona! I have know Julie for years and became obsessed with her Desert Dwellers series when she first announced it, in fact I … [Read more...]
Create a Food Themed ABC Book
We were so excited to see that this month's Virtual Book Club for Kids author was Lois Ehlert! We have long-loved her vibrant illustrations and her focus on food and animals and were happy to discover books of hers we had never read before. However, it was an old favorite that we spent the most time reading. Eating the Alphabet definitely resonated with the kids. So we decided to create our own version of the ABC story. The kids searched … [Read more...]
Create an Alphabet Puppet Theater
We had a ton of fun with July's Summer Virtual Book Club for Kids' author Audrey Wood. And yes, I know it's already August. Better late than never! There are so many great books by Audrey Wood and her husband Don, but we became obsessed with the series of books based on the alphabet that she did with her son Bruce. Alphabet Adventure, Alphabet Mystery, and Alphabet Rescue follow the adventures of a set of precocious lowercase letters. In the … [Read more...]
Busy Bag Swap Ideas for Kids
A couple weeks ago I invited some friends to kick off the summer with a busy bag swap! What better way to get ready for summer travel than to stock up on new activities? If you've never heard that term before a busy bag is a self-contained activity or project for kids. For this swap the activity did not have to be reusable, it just had to have all the pieces and instructions needed for kids to complete. There were 6 moms who could make it so … [Read more...]
